Sponges (Porifera) contain many specialized small molecule peptides of interest because of their potent biological activities and their roles in shaping marine ecology. Here, we demonstrate that sponges themselves also produce many . sponge genomes contain RiPP pathways to cyclic peptides such as phakellistatins and others.
